When Stella was 4 years old, her father suddenly passed away from a heart attack. Her mother suffers from eye problems and is in poor health. Stella has a twin sister, along with two older sisters and an older brother. The family has not yet received any government assistance and relies solely on farming a small piece of rented land to make a living.
Stella’s family lives deep in the mountains, in one of the poorest villages. Their house is a drafty brick building, with torn plastic sheets used to divide the space into sleeping areas. Blankets and clothes are piled haphazardly on the beds. Blackened preserved meat (their only meat for the entire year) hangs under the eaves. In the center of the floor is a fire pit for warmth, and right next to it is a simple stove for cooking—there isn’t a single complete pot or bowl in the house.
