Elina’s father defended the country from the first days of the invasion. He and his crew died in 2022. Elina’s widowed mother was pregnant at the time, and Elina was born later that year in September. She stayed with the little baby alone in the town where her husband served, since there was no way to return to her family currently living in the occupied territory.
